Energy storage protection

Energy storage

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a technology developed for storing electric charges by using specially developed batteries. The underlying idea being that such stored energy can be utilized at a later time. Lithium-Ion batteries are rapidly being introduced in these stationary energy storage applications as an alternative to commonly used Lead Acid batteries. The higher energy storage capability, as well as better charge/discharge performance, has lead to a rapidly increased use of this technology outside the automotive industry where they have been a crucial factor for the increased popularity of electrical and hybrid vehicles.

These batteries are normally very reliable over their lifespan but can unfortunately also, in case of a failure, lead to severe consequences both for the integrity of the installation as well as the surrounding environment.

When Li-ion batteries fail through short-circuiting, overcharging, high temperatures,
mechanical damage, and overheating, this might cause thermal runaway. Thermal
runaway occurs when a battery cell has reached the temperature at which the
temperature will continue to increase on its own and the electrolyte catches fire.

As a solution to specific risks related to batteries Dafo Vehicle has developed the Li-IonFire™ fire protection system. The system will detect potential battery failure, at the earliest possible stage and take immediate action by cooling, using the suppression agent Forrex EV™. This will effectively stop, or delay, a potentially hazardous situation without the fire developing further.

Battery Fire Protection allows safe use of battery energy storage systems and industrial power banks wherever they are installed.
